The Movie Queen's Mouth is Blessed - Chapter 48
“By the way, it’s been a long time since you’ve been home, right? I heard your father isn’t feeling well lately. You should go back and see him if you have the chance.” Li Wei thought of something. “We’re family, after all. There’s no need to let a little argument chill your heart towards your loved ones.”
Jiang Xiaobai was taken aback. “Thank you for the reminder.”
Li Wei left, and many people in the production crew noticed her private conversation with Jiang Xiaobai. The spectators imagined a tense scene of conflict, full of anticipation.
Who could blame them, given that Li Wei had arrived with a less-than-friendly expression and a hint of provocation?
But to their surprise, no conflict occurred. They had a harmonious chat and then parted ways.
“Do you know her?”
Gu Xue leaned in and whispered to Jiang Xiaobai.
“I met her once before, but we’re not close.”
“Even though you’re not close, she came to talk to you alone?” Gu Xue was surprised. “You should take this opportunity. She’s a big shot, the daughter of Hongye Film & TV and now the nominal CEO. She has a lot of power.”
The entertainment industry is a small world. A person of status might not stand out individually. Still, their network of connections is vast and influential, affecting many others.
Jiang Xiaobai smiled. “It was just a greeting… How’s your filming going?”
“Probably another month, and it’ll be over. Sigh, I’ll miss it…” Gu Xue’s topic had shifted without her realizing it. She felt a mix of anticipation and loss, knowing her time on the set was ending.
Overall, the atmosphere in the Legend of the Nine Heavens production crew was surprisingly good. Apart from Li Biying’s initial aloofness, which made everyone uncomfortable, everything was now harmonious, and filming felt mentally and physically refreshing.
She really didn’t want to leave.
Jiang Xiaobai still had nearly two months of filming left. If everything went smoothly, that time might be shortened a bit.
Thinking of what Li Wei had said, Jiang Xiaobai felt she needed to go home.
She approached Director Niu and explained that her family was not well and she needed to take a day off. After some thought, Director Niu agreed, noting that she had a few scenes the day after tomorrow. Jiang Xiaobai gratefully accepted.
She had been taking a lot of leave recently, which made her feel guilty. However, she wasn’t the only one. Most of the main cast did the same, except for the minor supporting actors.
After all, a production can last several months. If actors stay on the crew without appearing elsewhere, the public might forget about them. For an artist, constant exposure is crucial to maintaining popularity.
So, they either took on commercial performances, promoted new projects, or appeared on popular variety shows to keep their presence known. Director Niu knew this and didn’t comment unless someone was too irresponsible.
Taking leave for family matters was a common and understandable request, and Director Niu couldn’t refuse.
The next day, Jiang Xiaobai’s scenes wrapped up early, and she headed straight to the airport in the afternoon, flying to City S.
The Jiang family was one of the prominent households in City S, residing in the Liyuan Villa District. Jiang Xiaobai took a taxi there and bought many health supplements.
In the original owner’s memories, her father had always been in poor health, mainly due to heart issues. As he aged, he became increasingly sensitive to stress. Because of his health, the company had gradually been handed over to her brother, Jiang Zhiyi.
Jiang Zhiyi was only a year older than the original owner. He was interested in e-sports, and during college, he formed a team that gained significant recognition in the industry. He might have won international awards if he had continued on this path.
However, the Jiang family’s strict traditions wouldn’t allow it. As the only son of the Jiang family, could Jiang Zhiyi abandon the family business to play games? Impossible!
So, after a year of rebellion post-college, he finally gave in to his family’s persuasion and returned to take over the business.
In reality, Father Jiang and their mother favored their daughter, Jiang Xiaobai, because she had a strong drive. She was more suited to a business career than her laid-back brother. Her cold and calculating nature meant she would focus solely on business, and with a few years of refinement, she could have a bright future.
However, Jiang Xiaobai had an inexplicable obsession with the entertainment industry. Her parents’ attempts to dissuade her were in vain, leading to frequent arguments that always ended in frustration. After she entered the industry, she moved out, and the family’s relationship grew increasingly tense. When she insisted on breaking the engagement with Wei Shaoye, the relationship hit rock bottom, and they hadn’t seen each other since.
After Jiang Xiaobai left, Jiang Zhiyi, despite his reluctance, had to take over the company, often complaining about it to the original owner.
Arriving at the Jiang residence, Jiang Xiaobai used her key to open the door and heard voices inside.
“… Take better care of yourself, and don’t overwork.”
“Sure, sure. I appreciate your concern.”
Jiang Xiaobai changed her shoes in the foyer. Hearing the young man’s voice, she paused, composed herself, and entered the living room. “Dad, Mom, I’m back.”
“Xiaobai? You’re here. Come, come, sit down. You must be tired from work; you look so thin. Why did you buy so many things? It must have been a struggle carrying them all by yourself!”
Jiang Xiaobai’s sudden appearance momentarily stunned the three people inside. Father Jiang eyes first lit up with joy, but then he put on a stern face and turned away. Mother Jiang, however, welcomed her with evident happiness and took the health supplements from her hands.
Apart from them, a young man was sitting on the sofa.
He wore a casual suit, and his long legs looked striking even while seated.
Seeing Jiang Xiaobai, his star-like eyes sparkled, brightening his slightly pale face. His handsome face glowed with a complex mix of emotions.
“Xiaobai.”
He stood up, his eyes never leaving Jiang Xiaobai, and his emotions were complicated.
“Uncle wasn’t feeling well, so I came to check on him. I didn’t expect to run into you.”
Wei Shaoye’s heart ached, his lips pressing together briefly before he resumed his usual gentle demeanor.
As always, he was as warm and refined as jade.
“Hmph, you’ve been enjoying yourself in the entertainment industry for so long, forgetting your roots. Why are you back now?”
Father Jiang looked displeased and gave Jiang Xiaobai a harsh look. However, a hint of tenderness was hidden in his eyes.
After more than half a year, his daughter had lost weight…
“It’s getting late; I’ll leave first. Uncle and Aunt, I’ll come to visit another day.”
Wei Shaoye knew he should leave this situation. They hadn’t seen each other in a long time and likely had much to discuss, so he politely excused himself.
