- Chapter 15.2 - Wen Yue’s Efforts
After finishing a set of staff techniques, she put away her staff, wiped the sweat from her brow with her sleeve, and smiled, “It’s precisely because I know that effort isn’t as important as talent that I need to work even harder.”
“Hmph, in my opinion, with your cultivation level, you’d just be risking your life at the border. Why not give up and stay home? It’s better than facing such danger!”
Seeing that Wen Yue just smiled and didn’t take her words to heart, Wen Ling rolled her eyes, lifted her chin, and walked away.
Wen Yue looked down and saw a small bottle of Spirit Gathering Pills left on the table. She shook her head helplessly and carefully put the pills away.
“This girl, always like this.”
Wen Yue murmured softly. If she really died at the border, the one who would be most heartbroken would be Wen Ling, her cousin who had grown up with her.
In her eyes, Wen Ling had a sharp tongue but a soft heart. She spoke harshly but didn’t mean harm, especially toward her cousin. She was deeply concerned for Wen Yue’s safety despite her mocking words. Over the years, she secretly saved countless spirit pills and elixirs to give to Wen Yue.
But Wen Yue’s heart was firm. From a young age, she had been taught never to retreat or give up!
Facing the possibility of death at the border, not only Wen Yue but all the disciples of the Wen family were determined not to back down!
“Everyone wants to live and enjoy wealth and glory.”
Wen Yue shook her head and muttered to herself, “The Wen family has never raised those who shy away from danger. I don’t want to avoid challenges and let outsiders look down on us.”
Meanwhile, after her confrontation with Wen Yue, Wen Ling, frustrated that her cousin hadn’t changed her mind, stormed off to the edge of the training grounds, where she happened to run into Wen Shu and Wen Xuening, who had come to practice.
The thought of how Wen Shu now treated her made Wen Ling feel deeply unhappy.
Back then, she and Wen Shu were the same age. Although she had a three-spiritual root, she had worked hard in her cultivation. She was at the first level of Qi Refinement at the time, while Wen Shu was at the second level.
Last year, the two had been desk mates in the beginner’s class. Back then, the cold and aloof Wen Shu had just arrived, a wooden block that only cared about cultivation and ignored everyone else.
Wen Ling used a few sword techniques her father had taught her to trick Wen Shu into becoming her friend, and from then on, they attended classes together.
But after entering the clan school, Wen Xuening arrived. Also, with a three-spiritual root, she outperformed Wen Ling in every aspect during the entrance exam.
Wen Ling had boasted to her classmates, relying on overheard exam questions, that she would take first place. But in the end, she was both jealous and disdainful of Wen Xuening, especially since she couldn’t defeat her in a fight.
After much thought, she manipulated Wen Shu, the sword-obsessed fool, to help her regain face. Instead, she lost Wen Shu to Wen Xuening and couldn’t return.
A few months later, Wen Shu broke through to the fourth level of Qi Refinement, and Wen Xuening reached the third level. Only Wen Ling remained stuck at the bottleneck of the first level!
The more Wen Ling thought about it, the more upset she became. As the two passed by, she couldn’t help but snap at Wen Xuening, “I heard you were bothered at the Spiritual Weapon Pavilion. I was a bit worried, but now you seem completely fine. What, did you take a liking to that young noble?”
Wen Xuening stopped in her tracks, her expression one of surprise. She immediately pulled out a jade mirror from her storage bag and carefully examined her face, then turned to compare it with Wen Ling’s.
After a moment, she sighed in relief and casually tossed the mirror to Wen Ling, saying in a smug tone, “It’s my fault for being so beautiful that it makes people jealous. After all, some people don’t have anything worth coveting.”
“…”
Wen Shu, standing nearby, almost couldn’t hold back her laughter. She struggled to keep a straight face, maintaining her usual cold demeanor as if Wen Xuening’s words were an illusion.
Wen Ling, having instinctively caught the mirror, turned red with anger upon hearing Wen Xuening’s words, “Who are you saying has nothing worth coveting!”
Wen Xuening replied smoothly, “I didn’t name anyone. If you say you have something, then you do. If you do, why not go find someone to bother you? Why be jealous of me?”
Seeing the surrounding clan members trying to stifle their laughter, Wen Ling, though a bit slow, finally caught on, “You! How dare you! How dare you say that!”
Seeing Wen Ling’s eyes red with anger, Wen Xuening touched her nose, feeling bored.
“Little brat.”
She muttered, then took Wen Shu’s hand and walked away.
Since being with Wen Shu, Wen Xuening felt that her temper had improved. If it weren’t for not wanting to cause trouble for Wen Shu, she wouldn’t have bothered with words—she would have taught Wen Ling a lesson and left on her own!
