- Chapter 2.1 - The Determined Heroine
The following day, Wen Shu jumped out of bed and walked out the door with the face of a young girl. She was heading to the family school for her lessons. Her expressionless face still carried a hint of baby fat, and despite her serious demeanor, it didn’t convey much gravity.
In the original story, Wen Yuning had a balanced water-wood dual spiritual root, making her exceptionally talented. Her parents had fallen in battle against demonic beasts, filling her with hatred for the beast race. She trained relentlessly with her sword, vowing to one day defend against the beasts at the border and avenge her parents.
Thus, in the year since she arrived at the main family in Nanyang City, Wen Yuning spent her days attending classes at the family school or meditating and practicing her sword at home. Due to her personality and the trauma of losing her parents, she was quiet and reserved, unlike her playful peers. This was also why the family head held her in high regard.
When Wen Shu transmigrated, she didn’t inherit Wen Yuning’s memories. Over the past month, despite her emotional instability, she knew she had to be careful not to let anyone notice anything unusual. Especially after realizing she had become Wen Yuning, she became even more cautious about her behavior.
Fortunately, Wen Yuning’s naturally cold and quiet personality saved her from much trouble.
The Wen family wasn’t native to the Shao Kingdom. The main family had been established in Nanyang City for over three hundred years, starting with just over a hundred members. The family had slowly grown in size through marriages, discipleships, and recruiting new members.
The Wen family was known for its gentle and disciplined nature. It focused on self-improvement and quietly developed its resources without engaging in conflicts. Initially, the four major families of Nanyang City looked down on the Wen family, seeing them as newcomers. They even tried to incite smaller families to band together and take over the Wen family. However, they were unaware that the Wen family had a late-stage Nascent Soul elder backing them.
The Nascent Soul elders of the smaller families were only at the early stage, and the gap between early and late-stage Nascent Soul was vast. They were defeated when they tried to confront the Wen family; some even perished. After that, the Wen family enjoyed a century of peace.
Though not large in size, the Wen family had deep roots and a long history. Their members were refined and cultured, far surpassing the local families of Nanyang City. Unlike other families that prioritized strength above all, the Wen family placed great importance on their disciples’ moral and intellectual education. While cultivation was necessary, they believed that only through learning could one understand the world, history, etiquette, and morality.
A person with great strength but no knowledge, manners, or sense of justice would only become a burden to the family, no matter how much effort was put into their training.
The family school started at 5 AM, teaching the Book of Songs, Book of Documents, Book of Rites, Book of Changes, and Xia (an ancient dynasty of the Eastern Continent). Only those aged ten and above could attend. Younger children had to participate in the preparatory school next door to learn to read and write.
The master at the family school was an elderly man whose cultivation level was unknown. However, he claimed to be at the Foundation Establishment stage. He was over three hundred years old and had taught generations of Wen family disciples. His beard and eyebrows were as white as snow, and he was still quite spry.
The old man was knowledgeable and didn’t just drone on about classical texts. When he noticed students dozing off, he would skip the lesson and share stories from his travels or insights into cultivation. He was a great storyteller, and the family’s younger generation respected and loved him.
Classes usually lasted two hours, after which students could meditate or discuss their cultivation progress. Some preferred to go to the family’s library, which had private reading rooms. However, most students chose to stay in the main hall, as it was equipped with a spirit-gathering formation, making the spiritual energy there more abundant.
“The peerless heroine is now just a somewhat pretty child,” Wen Shu thought as she put down her brush and rubbed her sore wrist. She glanced at Wen Xuening, who was napping on her desk.
Wen Xuening was a bit older than Wen Shu, a thirteen-year-old girl with a tall and slender figure. Her features were beautiful, hinting at the stunning beauty she would become.
“Xiao Ning,” Wen Shu tapped her gently with the brush handle. “Master is looking this way.”
